What do the IMF and FSF failings in the run-up of the global financial crisis tell us on the governability of the global economy?

Tuesday, March 11th, 2014 – from 9:00 am to 10:00 am

At CEPII, 113 rue de Grenelle, 75007 Paris

In his latest book, Off Balance: the Travails of Institutions that Govern the Global Financial System (CIGI, 2013),  financial journalist Paul Blustein provides us with a detailed narrative of what he labels the failings of the IMF and the Financial Stability Forum (FSF) in the run-up of the global financial crisis that erupted in 2008. Based on interviews with policy makers and on confidential documents to which Paul Blustein obtained exclusive access, this book constitutes a useful complement to the recent publication of the minutes of the FED’s monetary policy committee meeting in September 2008 that showed the difficulties faced by the central bank to grasp the actual nature and the amplitude of the crisis. It also leads to sobering conclusions about the governability of the global economy.

As a financial journalist, specialist of the inner workings of international economic institution governance of the global economy, Paul Blustein has written extensively about international economics, trade and financial crises. He is currently affiliated with the Centre for International Governance Innovation and the Brookings Institution. Prior to joining CIGI in 2010, Mr Blustein spent most of his career reporting for The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal.

The meeting will be moderated by Christophe Destais, Deputy Director of the CEPII, and will consist in a presentation of Mr. Blustein’s latest book by the author, followed by an open discussion with the participants.

The presentation and discussions will be held in English.
