The World Trade Report 2018 "The future of world trade: how digital technologies are transforming global commerce"
by Cosimo Beverelli, Senior Economist, WTO

Cosimo BEVERELLI
Senior research economist in the Economic Research and Statistics Division of the WTO and a lecturer at the University of Geneva. He previously held research positions at the the Graduate Institute, Geneva, at the Geneva School of Economics and Management and at UNCTAD.

The World Trade Report 2018 sheds some light on the extent to which digital technologies that generate, store, and process data are already transforming global trade and will transform it further in the years to come. The report discusses the role of digital technologies such as additive manufacturing, the internet of things, artificial intelligence, and blockchain as determinants of trade costs, of the nature of products that can be traded across borders, and of patterns of comparative advantage. The report also considers how international trade cooperation can help governments reap the benefits of digital trade.
