SPOTLIGHT ON ... Sustainably Feeding a Changing World

Our Expert and Guest

Christophe Destais
Thomas Hertel,
Distinguished Professor of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University, USA
Founder and Executive Director of the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP)

By the middle of this century, the world’s population will have exceeded 9 billion people, with higher standards of living and altered consumption patterns.
Feeding this richer, larger population while avoiding further degradation of natural ecosystems will present a major challenge. Technical progress in agriculture is obviously a key factor, but energy prices, food waste and losses, water scarcity, and competing demands for land are also major determinants. In this talk, Prof. Thomas Hertel, an internationally recognised expert in the economic analysis of these issues, will review the implications of these challenges for world agricultural markets, food and environmental security. His views will be discussed by Christophe Gouel, Research Associate at the CEPII.
