New Perspectives on the Benefits of Exporting

Intervention to support export initiatives is commonplace in both industrialised and developing countries. Historically this has been underpinned by a belief that exporting is good for growth. But the evidence base underpinning this belief has been macroeconomic, yet intervention has generally been firm or industry specific. Recently a new literature has developed, exploring the determinants of entry to and survival in export markets, with firm level productivity as a key driver. This paper reviews and evaluates both the theoretical and empirical contributions to this literature. In addition to assessing the importance of new insights being generated, the paper speculates on new directions in which the research agenda will evolve. Abstract
