William Lincoln will present "North Korea's China Shock".

China joining the World Trade Organization in 2001 precipitated many changes worldwide. In this study, we consider the effects of this accession on the economy of North Korea in order to better understand one of the most problematic countries in the international order. China accounts for the overwhelming majority of North Korea’s trade and therefore its integration into the global trading system had the potential for significant effects. Using nighttime luminosity data and an instrumental variables approach we show that this was in fact the case.
