Julien Martin will present When Neighbors Stop Knocking: The Impact of Canada's 2025 Tourism Decline on U.S. Local Businesses”. Co-authored by André Kurmann (Drexel University) and Etienne Lalé (York University)

In early 2025, escalating diplomatic tensions and new trade tariffs between Canada and the United States triggered a dramatic decline in Canadian tourism to U.S. destinations. Using granular measurements of exposure to Canadian tourists across U.S. localities and industries from smartphone data combined with real-time establishment-level data on U.S. service firms, we provide an early assessment of the impact of the Canadian tourism decline on U.S. employment in consumer services.
